Packaging plays an important role in protecting food and reducing food waste, managing hazardous materials and protecting essential medicine. However, a lot of packaging is made from predominantly non-renewable resources and too much currently ends up in landfill or worse, the environment. The circular economy is challenging the way we package our goods, with new, innovative systems making reusable packaging more widespread and mainstream.
In a circular economy unnecessary packaging is eliminated, packaging is made from renewable or secondary materials, all packaging is designed to be 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable and effective collection and separation systems allow for valuable materials to be recovered to be used in new products.
In Australia, the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) is leading the 2025 National Packaging Targets.
